*Now* Let's Talk About Porn

Estimated reading time: ~ 3 minutes

TLDR - Porn is a cruel slave driver, but it doesn’t have to be ours. Let’s take back the crown and give glory to God by sharing Christ’s freedom.

Like many other parishes, we have certainly expanded our online footprint in the past week, which is great news!

We had three times as many views of our one Sunday Mass than we usually have at our 7 Masses on a weekend! With the live-streamed Masses, the podcast, and the blogs, we have been able to continue sharing the Gospel of Christ. It has been one consolation easing the pain of all the disruption in this time.

Unfortunately, we have not been the only ones to increase our online presence. I try to not check the news that often right now, and sadly, when I did check it earlier this week, one of the only headlines that wasn’t about COVID-19 was, “As churches expand online footprint during virus, so does porn.”

You can read the full article here.

Due to the lockdown measures in Italy, Spain, and France, Pornhub - the industry’s most popular website - has decided to make their “premium” content and features free for those countries. Since the change, their numbers have increased 11.6%.

It is a shrewd business move, shrewd like the serpent in the garden of Eden. Pornography is highly addictive, and many of those using the free content now will be compelled by their attachment to pay money for it later. Pornhub is capitalizing on the boredom and vulnerability of millions of people shut in their homes. It is sickening.

But it is not cause for despair. In the spirit of Fr. Brian’s podcast - let’s take back the crown. The enemy wants to use this occasion to enslave, so let’s use it to share Christ’s freedom. No matter whether you are struggling in this area or not, knowing about porn’s prevalence, addictive nature, and how to overcome it is essential for being a disciple of Christ today. It will help you be a better spouse, parent, priest, sister, and friend.

Last semester, I gave a presentation on porn with the very creative title, “Let’s Talk about Porn, with Fr. Greg.” We all have a little extra time on our hands right now, and I guarantee that watching or listening to this talk will be a good use of it:

For those who want to multitask, listen here (you just won’t be able to see the slides).

“For freedom, Christ set us free. So stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery”

Galatians 5:1

Pornography is a cruel slave driver, but it doesn’t have to be ours. Watch/listen to the talk to be inspired and equipped to live in the freedom of the children of God.

On the day that I gave the talk, we also launched the Freedom page of our website - a page designed to help men and women overcome sins of lust and attain the freedom for which God made us. While everyone's path to freedom is unique, there are four common elements involved in overcoming sins of lust:

  1. Filtering software

  2. Growth in self-knowledge

  3. Balanced and disciplined plan of life

  4. Accountability

Find great resources on our website to help you put those elements into practice. You got this!
